OSCar

Before wavetable synths were a category, OSCar stored user-drawn spectra and ran them through a dual-mode analog filter. Two voices, duophonic envelopes, and a panel that looks like a spaceship — the missing link between Part 1 of the manual and the Hydrasynth’s digital oscillators.

Interactive playground recipes are still planned. This stop ships study recipes, a labelled panel study, a five-part module tour, a timeline, gear comparisons, and the exact Manual / Hydrasynth chapters to practise while you wait.

Module tour

Five historical modules rewritten for learners — additive DCOs, dual-mode filter, duophony, modulation, and panel literacy — each with a bridge into live pages on this site.

  1. Operating Instructions · Oscillator / Waveform

Additive DCOs — draw the spectrum

OSCar’s oscillators are digitally generated but not simple saw/square presets alone: you can build additive waveforms by setting harmonic levels — closer to ‘draw a spectrum’ than ‘pick a wavetable slot’. That is the 1983 ancestor of Hydrasynth WaveScan and Harmonic Mutant thinking.

Pitch still tracks the keyboard like any DCO/VCO story. Timbre comes from which harmonics you light up before anything hits the filter. A bright saw-like stack gives the dual filter something to carve; a hollow odd-only stack already sounds ‘squared’ before cutoff moves.

    WAVEFORM / ADDITIVE
Select factory shapes or user harmonic drawings.
    OSC LEVELS
Balance the two digital sources into the filter.
    OCTAVE / TUNE
Coarse range and fine beats between oscillators.
    SYNC / MOD
Hard-sync and modulation paths where implemented on the panel.

  2. Operating Instructions · Filter

    Dual-mode analog filter

After the digital spectra, OSCar runs an analog dual-mode filter — low-pass or band-pass emphasis depending on mode. Resonance still peaks at the cutoff; sweeping it is the same ear skill as every acid and lead lesson on this site.

Band-pass mode is the sleeper lesson: it removes lows and highs, leaving a mid ‘honk’ that sits in a mix differently from a dark ladder low-pass. Hydrasynth Filter 2 morph (LP→BP→HP) is the modern continuous version of that idea.

    CUTOFF
Where the analog filter begins carving.
    RESONANCE / EMPHASIS
Peak at cutoff — whistle when high.
    MODE LP / BP
Low-pass smoothness vs band-pass mid focus.
    ENV AMOUNT
How far envelopes open or close the filter per note.
    KEY FOLLOW
Cutoff tracks pitch so high notes stay articulate.

    Bridge · Manual ch. 02 (Filters) + Hydrasynth Filter 1/2 + SH-01A VCF lessons.

  3. Operating Instructions · Keyboard / Voices

Duophony — two notes, two envelopes

Duophonic means two notes at once with more independence than a paraphonic mono synth: each voice can run its own envelope behaviour so intervals and simple two-note lines articulate cleanly.

It is not full polyphony like the Hydrasynth’s 16 voices. Think ‘bass + fifth’ or interlocking two-finger riffs — the expressive middle ground between SH-01A mono and modern poly.

    VOICE ASSIGN
How the two voices grab new keys.
    ENV 1 / ENV 2
    Per-voice or per-path envelope shaping.
    PORTAMENTO
Glide — musical on solos, muddy if always on.
    TRIGGER MODES
Single vs multi triggering when notes overlap.

Bridge · Manual ch. 00 (paraphony vs poly) + envelopes chapter.

  4. Operating Instructions · LFO / Sequencer

    Modulation and sequencer attitude

LFOs and envelope routing on OSCar are of their era: fewer matrix slots than a Hydrasynth, more than a fixed-switch mono. The onboard sequencer (where present on a given unit/mod) continues the 1980s theme — pattern as part of the instrument, not only a DAW afterthought.

Kenton’s MIDI retrofit notes matter historically: many surviving OSCars speak MIDI because of later hardware, not because MIDI existed at design kickoff. That retrofit story pairs with Manual ch. 05.

    LFO RATE / DEPTH
    Vibrato, filter wobble, PWM-style motion.
    MOD WHEEL / PERF
    Performance depth into assigned destinations.
    SEQ / ARPEG
Onboard pattern tools when fitted / enabled.
    MIDI (retrofit)
Note + clock I/O via later Kenton-style kits.

  5. Operating Instructions · Control Panel overview

    Reading the wedge panel

OSCar’s panel is a wedge with dense legends — the same ‘Manual & Panel’ fantasy this site designs around. Section bands group digital oscillators, filter, envelopes and performance. Do not scan left-to-right as signal order; scan by labelled module, then remember audio still flows oscillator → filter → amp.

Our SVG study on this page is a layout teaching drawing, not a traced product render: dual-filter block, additive DCO strip, knob row and keybed proportions.

Timeline

  1. 1983

    OSCar ships

Oxford Synthesiser Company puts additive digital waves through an analog dual-mode filter — hybrid before ‘hybrid’ was marketing.

  2. 1983

    MIDI 1.0 & TR-909

Same year the industry freezes the cable language and Roland ships the hybrid 909. OSCar sits in that pivot decade.

  3. Later

    Kenton MIDI retrofit

Surviving instruments gain reliable MIDI note/clock via third-party kits — essential for modern DAW use.

  4. Now

    Why it’s stop 02

After Hydrasynth’s digital depth, OSCar is the historical bridge: spectra you design → analog filter you feel. SH-01A then strips the story to one oscillator.

Compared with the route

  • vs Hydrasynth Deluxe

Both design spectra before filtering (WaveScan / Mutants vs additive drawings). Hydrasynth adds poly aftertouch, 32-slot matrix and FX; OSCar is duophonic and analog at the filter.

  • vs SH-01A

SH-01A is fixed-wave subtractive mono with a visible panel. OSCar asks you to invent the raw wave, then subtract. Use SH-01A to nail cutoff technique; use OSCar thinking for harmonic design.

  • vs TB-303 / TB-3

Acid boxes are one resonant voice + sequencer grammar. OSCar can do resonant sweeps, but its identity is additive-into-analog, not accent/slide culture.

Study recipes

Paper + sibling-gear drills until an OSCar playground ships. Each recipe ends on a live page you can open now.

    Additive init spectrum

Build a bright harmonic stack, then a hollow odd-only stack — hear the filter’s raw material change before cutoff moves.

    1. On paper (or Hydrasynth Harmonic Mutant): light harmonics 1–8 evenly for a saw-like buzz.
    2. Mute even harmonics so only 1, 3, 5, 7 remain — note the hollow ‘square’ character.
    3. Keep pitch fixed; only change the spectrum. Confirm timbre moved without retuning.
    4. Open Signal Path Explorer on SAW vs SQR to hear the same lesson with fixed waves.

Hear · Even stack = bright buzz; odd-only = clarinet/hollow. Filter later will carve both differently.

    Band-pass honk lead

    Contrast low-pass darkness with band-pass mid focus — OSCar’s dual-mode teaching point.

    1. Start with a bright source (saw or rich additive).
    2. In LP thinking: lower cutoff until the tone darkens but still has body.
    3. In BP thinking (Hydrasynth Filter 2 morph toward BP): carve lows and highs so a mid ‘honk’ remains.
    4. Play the same riff in both modes — notice which sits better under a kick.

Hear · LP = warm/dark; BP = telephone/mid lead that leaves bass room for drums.

    Duophonic fifth lock

Two notes with independent envelopes — the expressive middle between mono and poly.

    1. Hold a low root with a long amp release; add a fifth with a shorter release if your practice synth allows split envelopes.
    2. On Hydrasynth (true poly): play root + fifth and use poly aftertouch on only the upper note.
    3. On SH-01A (mono): play the interval as a fast hammer-on to hear what you lose without duophony.
    4. Write one riff that needs two independent articulations — that riff is why OSCar exists on the route.

Hear · Duophony/poly: both notes speak. Mono: the second note steals the voice.

    Dual-filter envelope pluck

Short filter envelope + short amp = the classic hybrid pluck, regardless of additive or saw source.

    1. Set amp: near-zero attack, short decay, low sustain, short release.
    2. Route a matching short envelope to cutoff with high amount.
    3. Play staccato mid-range notes; raise resonance until the pluck ‘spits’ once.
    4. Swap source from saw → odd-harmonic stack and hear the pluck colour change without touching envelopes.

Hear · A wooden click into a short body — pluck lives in the envelopes, colour in the spectrum.

    Experiment · Dark and bright

    1983 motion (LFO depth)

Slow LFO to pitch or pulse-like width — era-correct motion without a 32-slot matrix.

    1. Assign a slow triangle LFO (~3–5 Hz) lightly to pitch for vibrato.
    2. If PWM-capable: same LFO to pulse width at low depth for chorus shimmer.
    3. Keep depth musical — 1983 panels rarely hid ten modulators under one note.
    4. Contrast with Hydrasynth: one Mod Matrix slot PolyAftT → WaveScan for modern motion on the same phrase.

Hear · Gentle vibrato/PWM shimmer vs modern per-note WaveScan — same musical job, different levers.

Spectrum + filter as one memory

Store additive drawing and filter mode together — the patch is the pairing, not either alone.

    1. Design two spectra (bright stack / hollow odds).
    2. Pair each with LP vs BP settings and write the four combos on paper.
    3. Audition each combo on the same melody; pick one ‘lead’ and one ‘pad under’.
    4. On Hydrasynth, save two patches that encode the same intent with WaveScan + Filter 2 morph.

Hear · Four distinct patches from two spectra × two filter modes — memory discipline beats knob fishing.

FAQ

Why is OSCar on the gear route before SH-01A?
It is the historical bridge between digital oscillators and analog filters — the same story Hydrasynth tells in 2020s form. Reading OSCar clarifies why wavetables, additive drawings and ladder filters feel related, before SH-01A strips the panel to pure subtractive mono.
Is there a browser playground for OSCar yet?
Not yet. Use the panel study and module tour on this page, the study recipes below (paper + Hydrasynth / Signal Path practice), Manual chapters 00–02, and SH-01A for pure subtractive mono.
What should I read on this site before OSCar hardware?
Manual chapters on signal flow, waveforms and filters; Experiments for raw buzz and filter sweeps; then the Hydrasynth harmonic-sweep recipe to feel spectrum design in a live playground.
Was OSCar analog or digital?
Hybrid: digitally generated / additive waveforms into an analog dual-mode filter, with duophonic playability. That split is the teaching point of this stop.
Where is the official manual?
Oxford Synthesiser Company is defunct. Community scans of the Operating Instructions (~70 pages) and Kenton’s MIDI retrofit PDF are the references we point to — we do not host those files.
How does duophony differ from polyphony?
Duophony is two notes with meaningful independence. Polyphony (Hydrasynth: 16) is many fully separate voices. Paraphony (shared filter/amp) is another middle ground discussed in Manual ch. 00.
Can I practise OSCar ideas without owning one?
Yes. Study recipes below map each idea to Signal Path Explorer, Hydrasynth Harmonic / WaveScan patches, or SH-01A filter technique. Hardware remains the final exam, not the first lesson.
Why does band-pass matter on OSCar?
LP mode is the familiar dark/bright story. BP mode teaches mid focus — a ‘honk’ that sits differently in a mix and foreshadows Hydrasynth Filter 2 morph.
Will interactive OSCar recipes ship later?
Yes — a dedicated playground is on the roadmap. Until then, the study recipes and module tour are the curriculum, with browser practice on sibling gear.
