Experiment #03
Dark and bright
Use cutoff alone to turn a buzz into a muted tone.
Sweep a low-pass filter across a saw. Cutoff is the most important shaper knob on almost every synth.
Promise: “I can darken a sound without changing the wave.”
Experiment #03
Dark and bright
Use cutoff alone to turn a buzz into a muted tone.
- 1.Start with SAW, CUTOFF high, RESO near zero. Hold a mid note.
- 2.Turn CUTOFF slowly left until the buzz becomes a muted hum.
- 3.Sweep it back open — that opening is the classic filter gesture.
- 4.Leave CUTOFF around 800 Hz and play a short riff. Notice how notes already feel “synthy”.
You should hear…
Bright buzz → dull hum → bright again. Pitch stays put; only the top end moves.
Doesn’t sound right?
No change? Confirm the filter isn’t bypassed in Signal Path Explorer, or that CUTOFF isn’t already at the floor.

Why it sounds like that
A low-pass filter removes highs above its cutoff. That single control is how subtractive synths invent vowels, basses and pads from one oscillator.
