Experiment #11
Sub foundation
Build a simple, solid bass that sits under a track.
Square or saw, low cutoff, moderate resonance, short-ish release — the unglamorous bass that mixes well.
Promise: “I can design a bass that stays out of the way.”
Experiment #11
Sub foundation
Build a simple, solid bass that sits under a track.
- 1.Play notes around C2–G2. The patch should feel round, not screamy.
- 2.Open CUTOFF only until the bass speaks — stop before it hisses.
- 3.Keep RELEASE short so notes don’t smear when you play faster.
- 4.Compare SAW vs SQUARE: square often sits cleaner under busy drums.
You should hear…
A firm, muted low end with a clear pitch and almost no sparkle — boring in solo, perfect in a mix.
Doesn’t sound right?
Muddy? Raise CUTOFF slightly or drop RESO. Thin? You’re too high on the keyboard — play lower.
Try it on your gear
- SH-01ASub oscillator + low FREQ
- Hydrasynth DeluxeOSC + low-pass; leave mutators subtle
- TB-3Low cutoff, modest reso, no accent spam
Why it sounds like that
Good bass is often less harmonics, not more. A darker filter and tidy envelopes leave room for hats, vocals and leads.
