Experiment #12
Read the bytes
Decode a MIDI Note On before you send patterns to a DAW.
No speaker required — this experiment is about messages, not tone. Pair it with the Manual MIDI chapter and the Step Groove Machine.
Promise: “I can read what my gear is saying.”
Experiment #12
Read the bytes
Decode a MIDI Note On before you send patterns to a DAW.
- 1.Open the Manual MIDI chapter figure and set CHANNEL to 1, NOTE to 60.
- 2.Change CHANNEL to 10 — only the status byte should change (drums live here).
- 3.Change NOTE to 69 (A4). The data byte becomes 0x45.
- 4.Program a groove in the Step Machine knowing each hit is just note + velocity + time.
You should hear…
Nothing — MIDI isn’t sound. You should see status and data bytes update as channel and note change.
Doesn’t sound right?
Hex confusing? Read the binary line under the figure; same byte, bit by bit.
Try it on your gear
- TR-8SMIDI note map per instrument
- SH-01AMIDI channel + clock
- Hydrasynth DeluxeMIDI channel / USB MIDI
Why it sounds like that
Once you can read Note On, every sequencer, DAW and hardware link stops being magic. Export and sync (roadmap) will reuse this literacy.
